About the English Department at Beit Berl College

Language is at the heart of our human experience. It informs our identity, our actions, and the way we access and operate our knowledge. Given the status of English as a global language, the demand for teaching English as an additional language (i.e., third or fourth) is constantly growing in Israel and around the world. To those ends, the Department of English at Beit Berl Academic College offers a program that includes a wide range of courses in the following main areas: English Language and Linguistics, English Literature and Culture, Literacy, and Language Teaching Methodology- taught in English.

The program gives students a “state of the art” map of the field of second/foreign language teaching, and flexibility to move in the direction of their interests through options to specialize in areas such as: the young learner, teaching EFL to students with special needs, incorporating technology in EFL instruction and additional innovations in EFL instruction. It is our aim to produce professional EFL teachers with deep subject-matter and pedagogical knowledge, who are up-to-date with the latest research in the field, and devoted to their work with pupils at school.

Course Instructors

In every area of the program, students work closely with excellent course instructors and pedagogical advisors who are active scholars and whose research interests range widely, e.g., language acquisition, multilingualism, language policy, British and American literature, teacher cognition and assessment, learning disabilities and foreign language acquisition.

TEFL Certificate Programs

The English Department at Beit Berl offers the following programs:

The Teacher Training Program: Our teacher training program qualifies applicants to teach English as a foreign language in both primary and secondary schools. We offer the following certificate programs:

  1. Bachelor of/Baccalaureate in Education (B.E.d) with a specialization in Teaching of English as a Foreign Language.
  2. A retraining program for academics (i.e., holders of undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited university).
  3. A retraining program for practicing teachers (i.e., of another school subject) who wish to obtain a teaching certificate in English.

Specialization Modules: Our teacher training program offers two specializations based on a range of elective courses:

  1. Teaching English to Students with Special Needs
  2. Teaching English to Young Learners. These clusters of courses are designed especially for students who wish to expand their knowledge, skills and abilities in teaching English to these student populations. Additionally, students may study elective courses leading towards a certificate in Translation (i.e., English-Hebrew/Hebrew-English).

Tutors’ Program: This unique hands-on program is designed to prepare graduates for tutoring or teaching English in small groups at primary, secondary and adult levels. Areas of study include: English grammar and pedagogical grammar, language teaching methodology for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners, remedial teaching, teaching English for special purposes, teaching native English speakers, creativity and innovation in language teaching including material development and assessment, business English, the matriculation exams, and distant learning, The course takes place on Thursdays from 8:30 to 15:45. Further information about the Tutors’ Course, please find here

The Practicum Experience: The practicum courses progress from primary to secondary schools. Students spend a great deal of time observing and practicing teaching in schools within the P.D.S (Professional Development School) model. Students are guided to work on long-term projects that involve collaboration between students, mentor teachers and the pedagogical advisors.

On-Line Courses: Our program involves students in a variety of learning environments and instructional delivery methods. Distance education is used as an integral part of our program in order to provide our students with the opportunity to develop skills and strategies required for on-line teaching and learning. Additionally, this mode of instruction, allows students to study some of the courses on their own schedule.

Scholarships: English is one of the preferred subjects in the Israeli Ministry of Education. Students studying in the English Department towards a teaching certificate are eligible for a conditional, preferred scholarship issued by the Ministry of Education throughout their studies. For criteria for eligibility and exact amounts of scholarships, please visit our website. Additionally, the English Department offers a number of merit scholarships and awards based on academic achievements, diligence and community service.

The Learning Environment: Throughout their studies, students are given personal guidance and support in both disciplinary courses and practical experience. The small class sizes, flexible study schedules and excellent teaching make our teacher education program unique. Our on-line journals highlight some recent student and departmental achievements. More details about the English Department at Beit-Berl College and our on-line journals can be found here.
