General Goals of the Institute

The major goal of the training program (qualification) in the institute is to train a teacher with a humanistic approach and curious intellect mastering the domains of knowledge and their teaching. The institute seeks for developing the students' capacities of individual learning and encouraging their initiatives through personal guidance, laboratory experiments, working at workshops and using libraries. Such practical experiences aim at transmitting the teaching and progress responsibility from the teacher to the student who is getting ready for the teaching career.

  Specific Goals of the Institute

The suggested teaching program seeks to achieve the following aims:
1. To increase the student's awareness of the conflicts and contradictions existing as a result of the development of the Arab society.
2. To educate for democracy and develop the awareness of Arab - Jewish coexistence in the state, and self-commitment to Arab society in the Israeli society.
3. To familiarize the student with the Aral educational system in order to develop an awareness of problems and ways of overcoming their problems.
4. To Provide the teacher with the required skills for performing the tasks of teaching and concentrating on the practical work.
5. To Enlarge the students' information and knowledge in their specialization subjects in the different learning stages, elementary, intermediate, lower classes (kindergarten - 2nd grade) and special education.
6. To Recognize of the basic theories of education (psychology, sociology, philosophy) which are extremely important for teaching. These bases are regarded a helpful means for the graduates to perform their jobs properly both at school and at the community.
7. To Apply and use a wide variety of different teaching methods to the particular circumstances in the Arab school and in Arab society.
8. To Enhance the general culture of students and focus on the following subjects: Arabic language and literature, Islamic and Arab civilization, Hebrew and Israeli civilization.
9. To achieve the above-mentioned aims, the institute runs offers learning tracks and specializations adopting certain teaching means such as lectures exercises, workshops, teaching projects, personal guidance, visiting educational institutions and pedagogical centers.

  Registration and Conditions of Acceptance

The suggested teaching program seeks to achieve the following aims:
All twelfth grade graduates with a Bagrut certificate are entitled to register for study at the institute. The institute accepts all students that fulfill the following conditions:
1. All students having the matriculation certificate (Bagrut) provided that the final mark in Arabic is above 70% (3-5 points). Consequently, if the student's mark in Arabic is below 70%, his application won't be dealt with. All certificates must be issued from the Examination Department of the Ministry of Education. Therefore, certificates issued by other resources won't be accepted.
2. The average mark of all subjects of the Bagrut examination must be at least 70%. Moreover, the final mark in the psychometric test must be at least 450.
3. The integration mark of both the Bagrut examination average and the psychometric test must be above 500.
4. Pass an individual interview or an interview within a group of 8-10 people successfully.
5. Pass another exam in the subject of specialization that the student has chosen. Passing the exam is compulsory for those students who want to be specialized in English.

In addition, qualified teachers who are interested in studying at the institute for the B.Ed certificate are entitled to register.
University graduates with B.A. degree can also register in order to acquire the teaching certificate. Besides, other in-service training courses at all subjects are available in the institute.

 The Library of the Academic Institute for Training Arab Teachers

General Information

The Library of the Academic Institute for Training Arab Teachers was established in 1972, with the foundation of the Seminary for Arab Teachers in Jaffa. This independent Library operates in conjunction with the College's Main Library. The two libraries complement one another, and the Institute's library serves students and teachers at the Institute and at the College at large.

 

 The Book Collection 

The Library contains more than 70,000 files concerning academic and research activities at the Institute. These files pertain to all areas of specialty relevant to teacher training, and offer answers to student needs based on publications in Arabic.

The Library collection is composed of:
Printed materials: professional literature, periodicals, children's books, rare books, reference books, scholastic programs, curriculums and other teaching materials produced in Israel and abroad.
Other materials: computer programs, slides, maps, etc.

 

The Collection 

The Library collection includes books on the following subjects:
Arab literature
Arab grammar
History, Islamic culture and Muslim religious law
Geography
Sciences: biology, chemistry, physics, math, etc.
The helping professions: education, psychology, sociology, etc.
Reference books: dictionaries, encyclopedias and concordances.
Periodicals: more than 80 periodicals and newspapers in Arabic on a variety of subjects: literature, history, education, psychology, etc.
