New Academic Year Gives Emphasis to Innovation and Entrepreneurship

"In this new academic year, Beit Berl College’s direction is clear: we are focusing on innovation on many levels – launching new programs and technologies, upgrading the campus, and implementing a forward-thinking R&D agenda," asserts Beit Berl College President Prof. Tamar Ariav.

Innovation and entrepreneurship are top priorities at Beit Berl College this year, best exemplified in the newly inaugurated Hub for Social and Educational Entrepreneurship, to develop innovative solutions for emerging social and educational issues. As a recipient of the prestigious Horizon 2020 CHANGE project – the EU's program for research and innovation – this year the College will investigate the development and implementation of gender equality programs in organizations, collaboratively with six European academic institutions. Few colleges in Israel succeed in winning Horizon projects, and even fewer colleges of education.

Beit Berl has also upgraded its educational technologies, introducing new online platforms, such as MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) and global eLearning courses, which enable Beit Berl students to learn in English with students from all over the world. Other new initiatives launched this year include an accelerated English program to bring more high-level English speakers to the teaching profession, a certification program training future leaders of shared society education, and a first-of-its-kind certification program educating representatives from major Arab towns and cities to lead the development of informal education frameworks in their communities.

The College’s focus on innovation applies to the physical campus as well. This year, the College inaugurates two new buildings. The first building (yet to be named) is a new addition to campus, designed and built as an innovative learning environment, and includes state-of-the-art equipment and flexible furniture that facilitates a variety of teaching methods. The second building (unnamed), one of the original buildings of the College, underwent substantial renovations of its 20 classrooms, adding three new computer labs, a cafeteria and functional atrium. Modern communication systems were installed in both buildings, with infrastructure upgraded and facilities retrofitted with accessibility for people with disabilities across campus

The College’s priorities are also showcased in our Faculty. This year, author, lecturer and co-Director of the oral history program Time Tunnel, Dr. Kussai Haj-Yehia was appointed Head of the Arab Academic Institute of Education, and acclaimed video artist and lecturer Guy Ben-Ner was appointed Acting Dean of the Faculty of Arts-HaMidrasha. In addition, former Member of Knesset and Chair of the Meretz political party, as well as Beit Berl graduate, Zehava Gal-On, joined our Faculty, teaching her first course, “Using Legislation as a Tool for Social Change,” to a fully enrolled class.

Here’s to a creative, educational and illuminating year ahead!
