Beit Berl to be Israeli Hub for Innovative Pedagogy

The Friends of High Tech High Community in Israel has offered Beit Berl College to establish a center for training teachers in the spirit of the High Tech High (HTH) pedagogic methodology that is being implemented in a growing number of Israeli schools.

Beit Berl’s Faculty of Education is developing a plan for establishing such a center in order to incorporate elements of the HTH approach in its teacher education curriculum. A delegation of pedagogic experts from the College recently visited High Tech High in San Diego, California to learn first-hand about its unique methods and approach.

Founded on a commitment to create equitable learning environments and conditions that support the success of all students, the HTH approach resonates with Beit Berl College's values of social equity and academic excellence. A network of public charter schools that serve students in grades K-12 from diverse backgrounds, HTH boasts an impressive 97% college enrollment rate. This is especially notable since half the students are the first in their family to attend college.

“These students are not the elite,” emphasizes HTH founder Gary Jacobs, with whom the delegation met. “Rather, they are chosen according to a formula that offers students from all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds an equal chance."

In place of a standard curriculum, the students at High Tech High engage in multidisciplinary project-based learning, during which they participate in work that matters to them and to their communities. The principles of equity and personalization are cornerstones of the school’s ideology and lie at the core of the teachers’ mission to help students reach their full potential.

So far, many Israeli schools have embraced HTH’s unconventional approach, and elements of HTH techniques have been put into practice in elementary, middle and high schools throughout the country. However, in order for HTH-style education to flourish, it is essential to train teachers in its approach. The Friends of High Tech High Community in Israel has turned to Beit Berl College for this purpose.

Following the delegation’s study trip to San Diego in October, the College  set up  a faculty committee to examine how best to integrate the principles of High Tech High in the courses and programs that prepare Israel’s future educators, in addition to establishing an official HTH Training and R&D Center.

Beit Berl College is proud of its reputation as a leader in cutting-edge education – for all populations. By espousing the HTH pedagogy, the College further hones its position as an innovative institution that trains Israel’s educators for the schools of the future.

תודה, הבקשה נשלחה.
