HaMidrasha Gallery Curator and HaMidrasha Graduate Represent Israel at the Prestigious Venice Biennale 2019

HaMidrasha graduate and artist, Aya Ben Ron, was chosen to represent Israel at the Venice Art Biennale 2019, the most important international art event in the world. Curating the Israeli pavilion will be Avi Lubin, HaMidrasha lecturer and curator of HaMidrasha Gallery in Tel Aviv. The project, "Field Hospital X", is the first stage in a comprehensive project by Aya Ben Ron. This multi-disciplinary and dynamic project presents a hospital that deals with social evils and “treats” the values harmed: family, freedom, equality. The treatments will consist of video works by other artists and creators. Visitors serve in the role of the patients and choose a certain path, each dealing with a different value and treatment plan for a specific value. "Value counselors" will accompany visitors to the makeshift hospital.

Aya Ben Ron graduated from HaMidrasha in 1991, later teaching at HaMidrasha and was among the founders of the Faculty’s Digital Media studies. Her most famous works deal with health and the medical world, many of her works - installations, place-dependent projects, video works and documentaries - made in cooperation with medical institutions and hospitals. Rescue (2013), carried out in cooperation with Hadassah Hospital and exhibited at the Israel Museum, combines video work documenting rescue team rescuing a nurse, with a matching steel statue. Ben Ron has won numerous awards, including the Ministry of Culture & Education's Creativity Encouragement Award (2016), Dizengoff Prize (2011) and Minister of Culture Award (2008), among others. Her exhibits have been featured in The Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai, Busan Biennial in South Korea, Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Herzliya Museum of Art, and more.

Avi Lubin is a curator and writer in the field of contemporary art. He was recently selected curator of HaMidrasha Gallery in Tel Aviv.
