HaMidrasha Lecturer and Artist Exhibit Featured in Paris Museum of Modern Arts

Artist and award-winning photographer Ron Amir’s compelling retrospective photo exhibit, Quelque part dans le desert, or Somewhere in the Desert, will be featured in the Paris Museum of Modern Art (MAMVP) September 14 to December 2, 2018. The exhibit speaks about the living conditions of refugees held in Holot detention center in the Negev desert of Israel, which has since closed. Coming from Sudan and Eritrea, these refugees fled their homelands from terror and persecution, and were forced to clock in days and nights at the Holot detention facility. Amir’s works focus on the refugees’ peculiar daily life, dating from 2014-2016. These photographs show no faces or bodies, drawing into question the marks of a reinvented life in the desert. One observes – through the use sticks, sand, stones and abandoned objects – how refugees built community huts, tea salons, set benches, gyms, improvised ovens, and more. The exhibit, previously on display at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, is comprised of a collection of thirty colored and grand format photographs as well as six videos. Ron Amir is a famous contemporary Israeli photographer, known for his varied and bold projects that focus on major issues in current-day society. He is a lecturer at HaMidrasha-Faculty of Arts and Head of the Strengthening Arts in the Arab Community for the past five years.
