"Women of Freedom" Takes Center Stage

Dr. Abeer Zeibak Hadad, Beit Berl lecturer and director of the award-winning film, Women of Freedom, discussed the film at the

2022 International Conference on Gender & Women's Studies at the National University of Singapore. Gender and women studies experts from 23 countries participated in the conference where key note speaker, Dr. Michelle Philip of Wilson College in Mumbai, one of India's oldest colleges, screened the film for students of Gender & Women Studies, followed by a discussion with Dr. Zeibak Hadad.

As part of the November 25th International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Women of Freedom was screened throughout Israel: at Safed College in the Galilee, in the Bedouin city of Rahat, and in a high school in Nazareth. All screenings were accompanied by important discussions with the film director.

Winner of five international awards, Women of Freedom somberly conveys the difficult fate of girls and women who are murdered or threatened with violence by men, mainly from their own family. It tells the stories of Palestinian-Israeli women murdered for allegedly violating traditional patriarchal norms, and the stories of women who live in danger, or survived assassination attempts. The film attempts to uncover the social and political construct that allow for this murder, and the state's place in failing to treat the phenomenon which is particularly difficult in Arab society.  The film closes with young women chanting there is no honor in committing murder, "we are not created to live humiliation and inferiority, we are the women of freedom."
