HaMidrasha and the International Film School Cologne Co-Produce Documentary Films

On June 15, the two-year collaboration of the Film Department of HaMidrasha and the International Film School (IFS) of Cologne, Germany culminated in the screening of the project’s films at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque. Students from both schools worked in mixed teams to conceive, develop and produce documentary film projects on the subject of national identity in a migrant society. Both Germany and Israel are undergoing examination and change of social homogeneity, with the implications raising questions of personal identity: how does a young Israeli or German define his/herself in a multicultural society? How do these changes affect the definition and sense of a "homeland"? Are there fears of the future and how do they manifest themselves? Do the social rifts define society today? What is the connection between these changes to the history of Israel and Germany? These were among the questions students from both schools set out to define in their films. The four project films – May Everyone Walk Around Safely, Lullabies in Acre, Bus Line 881, and Tamar - are testimony to the points of view of the documentary: the visitor, a momentary guest in a foreign country.
