Teaching and Research Fields

Dr. Li Shir is a researcher in English literature who specializes in the poetry and rhetoric of the English Renaissance. 

She holds an MA in the Humanities from the University of Chicago (cum laude) and a PhD from Tel Aviv University. Her doctoral thesis was entitled “The Pastoral Poetics of Death – From Arcadia to Auschwitz,” and discussed the connection between the pastoral genre of classical poetry and contemporary depictions of trauma, particularly in literary and cinematic works depicting the Holocaust.

Dr. Shir also holds a teaching certificate (senior licensed teacher) from HaMidrasha – the Art Faculty.

Li Shir is active in multidisciplinary research combining English poetry and rhetoric from the Early Modern period, classical studies, practices of memory and commemoration, and depictions of war in literature, art, and the cinema.

She served as academic editor of HaMidrasha Journal for Culture and Art. She has published book reviews and served as an editor and rewriter for Haaretz. She has published poetry and prose in various literary journals. Her art works have been displayed in solo and group exhibitions in Israel and around the world.

Her first book of poetry, “Snow Melting Practice” (in Hebrew) was published in 2018.
